LATEST TECHNOLOGY CAN INCREASE FARM PRODUCTIVITY

LATEST TECHNOLOGY CAN INCREASE FARM PRODUCTIVITY

This refers to the editorial “Technology and farm productivity” [Business Line, 6th Feb].The only way to achieve immediate increase in food production is to aggressively adopt the latest technologies in agriculture which are proven and which are already adopted by the other nations without any serious after effects. Even during the ‘green revolution’ period the introduction of hybrid varieties of wheat, jowar and other crops was opposed by many people fearing adverse effect on the health of the consumer. But gradually everyone realized the need for adoption of hybrid varieties. As a result the country witnessed the ‘green revolution’ and the imminent food crisis faded of. Today’s position is no different. The government should adopt a carrot and stick policy. On one hand the farmers should be educated and convinced about the safety of the latest technology and provided with liberal incentives for its adoption. On the other there should be disincentives and discouragements to those who oppose the adoption the latest technologies. The government should act on a war footing.
