HUSAIN HAS MISUSED THE FREEDOM
This refers to the article “Why Should We Shut Up?”[March 16].Gautam Adhikari has unconvincingly tried to defend the right to freedom of expression of people like Husain and himself. He has unfortunately failed to understand and make a distinction between the use and misuse of the freedom of expression. India is probably the only country in the world which has given maximum freedom of expression to its citizens including Husain and Adhikari. The fact that Husain has happily spent almost all of his life in India with full freedom, and, the painting of nude portrayal of Hindu goddesses by him without any qualms, only buttresses the fact that he has enjoyed the maximum freedom of expression. But regrettably he crossed the boundaries of freedom of expression by nude portrayal of Hindu goddesses. Every freedom has its own limitations and boundaries. Those who want to enjoy the freedom must also act responsibly by acting within the boundaries. They should be intelligent enough to make a distinction between the use and misuse of the freedom of expression. Both Husain and Adhikari have miserably failed in this regard.
